Good Night, Sleep Tight

When I was a kid, I'm pretty sure I didn't have a bedtime. I sure don't remember any great bedtime ritual, anyway. I was the kid that fell asleep on the family room floor every night (I watched a fair amount of Dallas and Dynasty curled up on that shag carpet) and then wandered to bed when my parents told me to. Only sometimes I wasn't really awake and would wander into a closet or bathtub and go right back to sleep. They'd find me and send me to my real bed, like nice parents do.

Why am I telling you this? Because we have a pretty serious bedtime ritual in these parts. Brush teeth, sleeper on, two books (if the behavior/cooperation's been good; less if it hasn't because we're mean and bribe like that), tuck in, blessing, music, goodnight. Or at least that's the adult version. Wyatt's version has one extra step: get out of bed to fall asleep behind the door. We used to herd him back to bed, repeatedly, until he'd fall asleep under the covers. But lately we've been letting him fall asleep wherever. He never attempts to leave his room, so I've decided it just doesn't matter. Jeff likes carrying him back to bed when we come up for the night but I've been known to leave him there and he always ends up in his bed by morning.

But I'm not sure what to expect tomorrow morning.

Why? Because Wyatt's taken it to the next level. This is what we saw when we checked on him tonight:

Hmmm...that's his nana we see. And his pillow?

Let's take a closer look:

Yep, that's his hair, I think.

A little closer:

Annnnnd a complete look:

Sorry it's dark, but hey, the kid's asleep and I didn't want to wake him. In case you can't clearly see it, he's also taken off his shirt and wrapped himself in a fleece blanket off his bed. So I guess there's no need to tuck him in because he's done it for himself.

Funny boy. I sure love that kid.

I sure love that boy, too. And I remember someone else who was adept at finding ways to "have the last word" without being so "in your face" that she got into too much trouble (usually). And I sure love that girl, too.

I would leave him right where he is and never say a word. He's exerting his control in a most controlled way. Love it!

Too funny! Love the shinanigans. And I think it's sweet that he brought everything with him to go to bed by the door. Mine just wanders into my room and I find her next to me in the morning - sometimes in my bed, sometimes on the floor next to me. But not in HER bed!

That's so funny! Landon does that, too! His nightlight is right by the door so most nights I check on him only to find him asleep with full bedding on the ground next to the light, having "read" himself a book or four. I don't move him either. I figure he'll figure it out when his brother steps on him to get out of the room.
